They were founded in Los Angeles, CA in 1981 and moved to the Bay shortly where they have been based out of ever since. The band has always been led by guitarist and singer James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, and lead guitarist Kirk Hammet has been with the band basically since the beginning. Bassist Cliff Burton sadly died in an accident on tour and was replaced by Jason Newstead
